The Battle Mountain High School softball team closed out its season at home on Friday against rival Pershing County. The contest was a make-up game from earlier in the season that was postponed due to weather.
The Lady Longhorns gave the No. 3 seed all they could handle before dropping the contest 7-5. Battle Mountain finished the year 13-12 overall and 9-12 in the Northern 2A.
Pershing County took a 3-0 lead after the top of the third inning, when it appeared Battle Mountain tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning on a three-run home run by Jenna Leavitt.
However, the second runner to cross home plate was called out by the home plate umpire for not touching the plate, turning it into a two-run homer.
Battle Mountain tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Reagan Buller scored on a wild pitch. She started the rally in the inning with a lead-off walk.
Pershing County bounced back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs, including a home run to lead 7-3.
The Lady Longhorns got one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Destiny Villanueva scored. She was running for Marena Fuller, who singled earlier in the frame.
Battle Mountain attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning and trimmed the deficit to 7-5 after a double by Julia Ramirez and single by Leavitt.
However, the rally, game and season ended on a double play.
