Lady Bucks blank Wolverines 37-0 in two games

The Lowry High School softball team traveled to Truckee, Calif., last weekend and laid down the law to finish off the regular season.

The Lady Bucks secured the No. 2 two seed in this weeks 3A North Regional playoffs.

Lowry claimed a couple of three-inning wins 16-0 and 21-0 to finish the season with a 17-12 overall record and a 15-3 tally in league play.

“The girls played well," said LHS coach Austin Mayo. "They did a good job of staying invested and getting up for a game that we knew wasn’t going to be too competitive. We are just trying to get better every pitch and every at-bat.”

In Friday’s game, Lowry senior Macey Katzenmeyer only needed 36 pitches to dispatch the Wolverines.

She allowed only one hit in her five strikeout, no-walk performance.

Sophomore Alexus Gomez had six RBIs in her 2-for-2 performance and Sydney Connors went 2-for-2 as well with 3 RBIs of her own.

“Lexy came up to the plate and wanted to hit,” Mayo said. “Her bat has come on as of late and she came into some opportunities to get some RBI’s and she took advantage of them.”

In Saturday’s game, the Lady Bucks turned up the heat to another level.

Sierra Maestrejuan threw a no hitter at the Wolverines in just 34 pitches with a walk and two strikeouts.

Josie Ellifritz was 2-for-2 with four RBI’s, and freshman Kenzie Dowd-Smith had four RBIs in a 1-for-2 hitting performance.

Kelcey Cooper had a three-run home run while going 3-for-4 at the plate and Madi McClellan was 3-for-3 and she cracked three RBIs.

“We are looking to bring home the hardware and to do that we have to beat everybody," Mayo said. We will face Spring Creek or Churchill County (Fallon) and I like our odds against either one of them.”

Lowry has the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 3A North Regional playoffs that will be held at Elko High School.

The Lady Bucks have an opening round bye and will play their first game on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of the Churchill County and Spring Creek game that will be held on Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m.

Elko and Dayton begin the tournament on Thursday at 9 a.m. and that winner plays Fernley on Thursday at 2 p.m.

The championship semifinal is set for 2 p.m. on Friday and the championship will be played Saturday at 11:30 a.m. If needed, a second title game will be played 30 minutes after the first championship contest is over.

The two schools in the championship game qualify for the NIAA State Championships at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite on May 16-18.

“This week we will be working on the mental aspect of the game," Mayo said. "Physically and talent-wise the girls are already where they need to be, making sure that we peak at the right time. We have been in the top seeds for the last four or five years in the playoffs. Last year we got really close but didn’t get over the hump, this year it should be different.”
