Last Saturday the varsity Lowry High School track and field squad attended the Fallon Elks meet and only scored one win, but numerous medals and personal records were set.

Jasper Glasgow won his second consecutive shot put title with a toss of 42 feet, 1.75 inches, and he also placed ninth in the discus (106-7).

“Jasper won the shot put by one-half inch,” LHS track and field coach Grant Beatty said. “It was really close; it came down to the wire.”

Brandon Lee ran to a second-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 15.76 seconds, and Scottie Smith (5 feet, 8 inches) got silver in the high jump.

“Brandon ran a really good 800 as a sophomore racing against a talented senior (Spring Creek’s Noah Mahlke)," Beatty said.. "That is really good for Brandon and it will pay off down the road. He works really hard in practice and it is starting to pay off. Scottie did pretty good taking second overall. He has been struggling a little bit, so this was a good meet for him to get some jumps under his belt and get some confidence going into the next weekend.”

Both the men’s and women’s 4x 800 relay teams took second place, with the men (Lee, Sam Roth, Jeremy Walker, Will Kracaw) posting a time of 8:58.74, while the women (Becca and Jovi Kuskie, Kinsey Albisu, Adia Bengochea) came in with 10:46.10.

“The men’s 4x800 team ran a really strong race, Beatty said. “They beat Elko, Fernley and McQueen. They only lost to Reed, and they are probably the top program in the North.”

Colby Terry (11-0) was the final men’s medalist, securing bronze in the pole vault.

Rachel Garrison and Heather Hall were the only other medalists for the women. Garrison (31-4) took second in the shot put, while Hall (31-2) was only two inches short of her toss for third place. In the discus Garrison (110-3) took silver again and Hall (99-7) grabbed another bronze.

“We are looking forward to having the entire program together in Battle Mountain this weekend; we are taking over 60 kids. " Beatty said. "Our two throwers (Garrison, Hall) are going to go to the Reed Rotary instead of Battle Mountain. It is an elite meet and their throwing distances are right up there.”

The Reed Rotary was held Friday, March 29. Results of the contest were not available at press time.

The meet in Battle Mountain starts today (Saturday) at 9 a.m. at the Battle Mountain High School.

The Buckaroos don’t have a home meet until Saturday, May 4 starting at 9 a.m.
