More than 500 riders came to Winnemucca to compete in the I-80 Challenge at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway on Jungo Road last weekend.
Over 50 riders came from California, from an event that was rained out, to participate in this local event.
Thirty-one different classes competed at the event, including 50 cc beginners to 50 plus Veterans.
Cheri Duncan was working the office for the event.
“The big bikes practiced in the morning today (Saturday) and the little guys will go out in the afternoon to get ready for the main event on Sunday," Duncan said.
Demo Herrera is the president of the Winnemucca Motocross Club according to Duncan.
“We team up with two different circuits," Duncan said. "The I-80 Challenge between Carlin, Battle Mountain, Wells, and Winnemucca, and the BBMX which runs out of Reno, so we do Fernley, Winnemucca and Carlin with that. We run six races a year out here; three in the fall and three in the spring. We trophy out first, second and third places, sometimes more if we have a lot of riders. In our Pro-classes they race for money.”
Jake Johnson from Spring Creek was at the event.
“I have been riding for two years now," Johnson said. "I got into it because of the kids. They wanted to ride and they wanted me to ride with them. I am here today to race. I have been to Winnemucca before, I did the I-80 here last year and the BBMX Series.”
When asked what he liked most about Motocross Johnson said, “I like getting out there and forgetting about everything, just riding.”
