Lady Bucks win by mercy rule again at North Valleys

The Lowry High School softball team traveled to North Valleys last weekend and took their third straight win by 10 runs or more to go to 3-0 in league play.

“The girls played well,” said LHS coach Austin Mayo. “They jumped on it offensively out of the gate and kept it up. “Mackenzie (Salas-Begay) pitched well enough without her best stuff and only gave up one earned run and three runs total.”

The Lady Bucks scored three in the top of the first inning and didn’t look back on their way to a 13-3 win in five innings.

Freshman Bailey Hayes went 4-for-4, senior Sydney Connors went 3-for-4, as did Salas-Begay and senior Madi McClellan.

“Madi played well defensively and hit two home runs,” Mayo said. “Sydney also swung the bat well for us.”

Snow fell in North Valleys on Saturday and sent the Lady Bucks home with only one game for the weekend.

The Lady Bucks will take on Fernley in a double-header on Thursday at home starting at 2 p.m.

“We are going to have a tough opponent on Thursday in Fernley, that will not be a mercy-rule game,” Mayo said. “I am more focused on the fact that we are going to be playing seven games in three days. It will be a good indication of where we are at compared to our last tournament in Sacramento and get us prepared for what zone and regional will be.”

Mayo concluded, “Fernley, Fallon, and us have been the top three dogs for the past few years, so these games against Fernley have playoff implications. We need to come out focused and play to our game and not theirs.”

Lowry travels to Reed High School on Friday, March 29 for a tournament that starts at noon.
