The Winnemucca Sports Complex was the home of the Loopy Leprechaun Softball Tournament last weekend.

The tournament raised $3,937 for Suicide Prevention, the Frontier Community Action Agency, and Humboldt Hope Connection.

Eleven co-ed teams played games on Saturday and Sunday with a variety of twists and turns in an attempt to have fun and help out the community.

Julio Martin, was the co-director of the Loopy Leprechauns

“We are thankful for all of our sponsors and volunteers," Martin said. "Their help is what makes it all possible. It was a really good turnout; we had teams from Reno, Elko, Battle Mountain and Winnemucca. This year went great, it is probably the biggest turnout that we have ever had. We didn’t expect it, especially with the weather. It was rainy and cold yesterday, but today it was nice.”

On Saturday, the teams had the opportunity to roll a die to multiply their score, they could buy a “hard” softball for $20 to use in one inning to increase their chances for a hit, and they had to use an empty five-gallon water jug at bat in one inning of the game.

Kandy Havens from the Winnemucca Butterfingers team said, “Today was my first time playing softball; one of my friends said “let’s do it”, so I said OK, and we all signed up. I like the team spirit that we have and the experience that this has given us,” Havens said. “I hope to be better at it next time. I played the position where the ball doesn’t go, left field, but I hit pretty good actually; I got on base a couple of times.”

Havens concluded, “This is an awesome event and I think more people should participate.”
