BMHS track and field team performs well at Spring Creek, Lovelock

The Battle Mountain High School track and field team had a number of strong showings at its opening meet of the year at Spring Creek on Saturday, March 16.

The 4x100-meter relay of  Aldo Castellanos, Marcus Jury, Isaiah Powell, Jackson Whitlock were third with a time of 48.96 seconds. The 4x800 relay of Powell, Jimmy Cox, Declan McClary and Michael Malone were fourth.

Castellanos and Marcus Jury were third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump with marks of 5-4 and 5-2. Ryan Manning placed third in the pole vault with a vault of 7-6.

Powell was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16-5.75, Sruti Bhakta was fifth in the pole at 6-0 and Malone placed fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.85.

BMHS track travels to Lovelock

Battle Mountain was in Lovelock on Saturday, despite the cool and rainy weather.

Bhakta had a pair of runner-up finishes on the day, including the 100-meter dash, where she stopped the clock at 15.71. The senior was second in the pole vault with a mark of 5-6 and she was third in the triple jump with a leap of 28-0, which was a personal best. Bhakta also finished eighth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 12-0.50.

Diane Brown was 14th in the 200 meters at 38.95 and Anahi Lopez was 18th in the shot put with a toss of 20-9.75 and 20th in the discus at 54-4.

Battle Mountain was ninth in the team standings with 22.5 points. Pershing County won the team title with 188 points, while Tonopah (73) was second. Owyhee (61.5), Yerington (52.5) and Silver Stage (47) rounded out the top five.

On the boys side, Cody Ostler swept the jumping events. The junior set a personal best in the long jump at 18-5 and he had a mark of 39-7 in the triple jump. 

Castellanos was second in the triple jump with a mark of 38-4, while Malone was eighth at 30-10. Powell placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17-3 and Malone was eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.13. Jimmy Cox (2:44.94) and Ryan Manning (2:45.40) were 11th and 12th in the 800 meters.

Tristin Cordingley tossed the shot put 37-5 to place third, while Richard Davis had a career-best toss in the event of 34-1.25 to place eighth. Cordingley also placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 98-8. 

Castellanos (5-0) and Jury (4-10) were third and fifth in the high jump, while Castellanos placed fourth in the 100 meters at 12.48.  

The 4x100 relay of Castellanos, Jury, Austin Wilkins and Ostler won by nearly four seconds with a time of 49.72. Powell, Cox, McClary and Malone were fourth in the 4x800 relay.

The Longhorns placed third in the team standings with 147 points and Silver Stage was second at 107.

Battle Mountain will host its invitational on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
