Buckaroo track and field team start the season in Spring Creek

The Lowry High School track and field team traveled to Spring Creek last Saturday for its first league meet with a large squad and posted some good numbers.

Eleven teams competed from the 1A, 2A and 3A. Lowry was matched up against Elko and Spring Creek in the 3A Division.

“It was a great first meet," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "Sometimes the weather there is an issue. It was a little chilly, but there was not a whole lot of wind. They represented themselves well; there were no issues or injuries. Everybody came back that we brought, so it was a good start to the season.”

Jasper Glasgow was the gold medal winner for the men in the shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 2 inches. He also took fifth (112-2) in the discus. Colby Terry (11-0) won the pole vault event in their only other first-place finish.

The women were led by Rachel Garrison who finished first in the shot put (33-8) and the discus (112-1).

Adia Bengochea ran away with a two-second victory in the 400 meters at 64.36 seconds and garnered second place in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 37 seconds.

Becca Kuskie (5:46.36) dominated the 1,600 meters field by more than four seconds on her way to victory, and she finished third in the 800 meters (2:40.17).

“Rachel and Heather (Hall) are kind of separating themselves from the field early in the North," Beatty said. "They took first and second by a long shot in the shot put and the discus. Freshman Emily (Backus) also had a great start to her track career. She took second in the 200 (28.28) overall, second in the long jump (13-10), and took her first crack at the pole vault. She has a bright future, we are expecting big things.”

Jace Mentaberry finished in a three-way tie for second place in the 100 meters (11.78), and he was fourth in the 200 meters (24.44). Kevin Warren finished third in the 200 meters (24.13) and was fourth (16-7.5) in the long jump.

Sam Roth was second in the 400 meters (56.22) and sixth (2:25.9) in the 800 meters.

Will Kracaw managed a pair of second place finishes in the 1600 meters (4:55.64) and 3200 meters (10:44.96).

Jeremy Walker finished fourth in both the 800 meters (2:20.87) and the 1600 meters (5:14.0). Eduardo Aguilar (10-6) finished second in the pole vault.

Jovi Kuskie finished fourth in both the 800 meters (2:47.33) and 1600 meters (5:55.8). Lily Pasquale was third in the 300 meters hurdles (52.62) and fifth (12-9.5) in the long jump. Hall grabbed silver in both the shot put (29-6) and discus (109-3) for Lowry.

The Buckaroos will travel to Pershing County (Lovelock) for a JV meet today (Saturday) starting at 9 a.m. The varsity will attend the Fallon Elks Invitational which begins at 8:30 a.m.

“This upcoming weekend we are going to split the team up between JV and varsity to incorporate more of these athletes; give them more opportunities," Beatty said. "It is also a good opportunity for some of our younger kids to go to a meet and be separated from the varsity athletes, give them a chance to grow and experience some success. I am hoping to keep doing what we are doing; building towards keeping everybody mentally focused and prepared to do their best on the track. I have a good staff, great coaches. It makes it really fun to be around the kids with them.”
