Lowry softball squad hammers Spring Creek

The Lowry High School softball team went to Elko last weekend to start league play against Spring Creek and brought back two “mercy-rule” victories for a 2-0 record in the Northern 3A.
Lowry had lost all of its preseason games on a road trip to California before heading into conference play, but they turned up the heat when it mattered, giving hitting and pitching clinics to the Lady Spartans on Friday and Saturday.

Mackenzie Salas-Begay was the architect of the no-hitter in the opener against Spring Creek, and the Lady Bucks scored nine runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach early.

Sydney Connors had four RBI’s in the game while going 2-3, and Destiny Starkey added a home run. Sierra Maestrejuan was 3-4; Kenzie Dowd-Smith, Bailey Hayes, Kelcey Cooper and Starkey all had multiple hits for Lowry also.

16-0 was the final, with the game being called after four innings. Lowry had 15 hits and one error in the contest, while the Lady Spartans committed five errors in addition to their silent bats.

Lowry started a little slower on Saturday, going scoreless for two innings, before putting up three in the third, and four each in the fifth and sixth.

Connors, Cooper, and Starkey all had two hits for the Lady Bucks; Cooper and Starkey both had homers in the game.

Spring Creek managed to score their only run of the weekend in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough to keep the game from being stopped with an 11-1 final. The Lady Bucks had 10 hits and no errors in the game, while holding the Lady Spartans to four hits and they had four errors.

Lowry travels to North Valleys on Friday, for a 2 p.m. game, and they will play again on Saturday, at noon.

The Lady Buckaroos will return home on Thursday, March 28 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. against Fernley, Lowry beat Fernley last year to advance to the state tournament
