The Battle Mountain High School baseball team jumped into league play this past weekend at home and won two of three games from North Tahoe.
Longhorns lose opener
to Lakers
Battle Mountain dropped the opener to North Tahoe 8-7 on Friday, giving up as 6-3 lead.
The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third inning, but that was erased with a six-run fourth inning by the Longhorns. The lead did not lost long for Battle Mountain, as North Tahoe plated four runs in the top of the fifth inning and did not trail again.
The Lakers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning that would be needed. The Longhorns rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the gap to a single run but could not complete the comeback.
Chase Durick and Kelvin Diaz each had two hits for the Longhorns. Kade Quintana, Daegan McClary and Hayden Morris each had one hit. Quintana also added two RBI.
Jordan Gonzalez started for Battle Mountain and suffered the loss. He allowed eight runs (five earned) and eight hits on six innings of work. He struck seven and walked five. Diaz threw the final inning and struck out two, while giving up one hit.
BMHS doubles up
North Tahoe
Battle Mountain fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning in Saturday’s opening game, only to rally for a 14-7 win.
The Longhorns countered with six runs in the bottom of the second inning to go in front 6-2 and led the rest of the way. The Lakers trimmed the margin to 7-2 in the top of the fourth on the strength of a four run inning but got no closer.
Battle Mountain followed with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four more in the sixth to cruise to the win.
The Longhorns pounded out 10 hits, with Diaz leading the way with three hits and three RBI. Durick added two hits and Marcos Jimenez, Gonzalez and McClary had one hits apiece. Jace Clark, McClary and Jimenez had two RBI apiece.
Diaz collected the win in six innings on the mound. He allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out five and walked five.
Longhorns win wild finale
Battle Mountain earned the series win in a wild finale on Saturday. North Tahoe grabbed an early advantage with two runs in the first inning, but that was gone when Battle Mountain scored four times in the bottom of the first.
The Lakers posted 11 runs in the second inning to retake the lead at 13-4 but that was not safe.
Battle Mountain scored four times in the second and seven times in the third inning to lead 15-13. North Tahoe tied the game in the fourth with two runs, when Battle Mountain took the lead for good, scoring four runs in the fifth inning.
Quintana, Diaz, McClary and Hayden Morris each had two hits for the Longhorns. Clark and Morris had three RBI apiece and Jimenez, Quintana and McClary each drove in two runs.
Jimenez picked the win in relief of Morris.
Battle Mountain hits the road this week to play Incline. The opening game of the series is set for Friday at 4 p.m. The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
