Battle Mountain golfers finish second at West Wendover

Despite chilly conditions last week, the skies were clear as the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team made its way to West Wendover and Toana Vista Golf Course on Thursday to open play in the Northern 2A.

The Longhorns finished second with a team total of 506. West Wendover captured first place in the tournament on its home course.

Max Villanueva led Battle Mountain with a fourth-place finish, as he shot 103. Avry Tucker made his way into the top-10 with a ninth-place finish shooting an 117.

Chris Taylor carded a round of 136 and Brice Domagala shot 150

“It was a very cold, clear day but I thought the guys did a good job of handling the frosty temperatures,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “Again it was nice to be on actual greens and get some good practice at putting shots together.

Battle Mountain began its season with a preseason tournament on Thursday, March 7, in Hawthorne. The Longhorns did not have enough players for a team score.

Tucker shot 100 to lead Battle Mountain. Villanueva (117) and Domagala (136) rounded out the scores for the Longhorns.

“It was nice to get out on a golf course in decent weather and actually put together shots and put on actual greens,” Wallock said. “Avry shot his best score of his career and the two freshmen performed well for their first ever high school tournament.”

Battle Mountain traveled to Elko on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns hit the course on Wednesday, March 28, in Jackpot.
