The Winnemucca Events Complex was the site of the 3D Indoor Archery Challenge last weekend and was a big bulls-eye with locals and visitors.

“This event is sponsored by the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority, but they have started a local archery club and hopefully by next year they will be ready to take the reins of it,” said director of the WCVA Kim Petersen. “We have about 250 archers here from Nevada, California, Idaho and Utah. This is 3D archery; we have very realistic-looking animal targets and other challenging twists.”

On Friday the “Smoker Round” was held where the targets had obstacles to make it more challenging for the contestants.

Mark Jones from Winnemucca was a first-time fan at the contest on Saturday and he commented, “I have some friends who are shooting and they talked me into coming down here. I did a little practice round with them yesterday, but my shoulder is a little sore today, so I am just going to watch today. Yesterday it was fun to watch the “Smoker Rounds” because of the obstacles. They had one where they had to shoot a rabbit through a cone, and that was fun to watch. We purchased bows around Christmas, so we are just trying to get into the sport. We figured that this event would be a good way to learn and see how some of the experts do it.”

A variety of archery events were held, including Traditional, Recurve, Bowhunter, Bowhunter Freestyle, Bowhunter Freestyle “Outlaw”, Bowhunter Freestyle Ltd., Open, and Pee Wee. Cash prizes and gift cards to local businesses were awarded in each category.

“We are happy that we are able to put this event on each year,” Petersen concluded. “It brings a lot of people into Winnemucca in a winter month. The facility works well for this and folks are happy to have a place in the winter to come and shoot. It is a win-win for everybody and we have some good sponsors that help put the event on.”
