The weather played a role for the Lowry High School softball team last weekend in their first games of the season in California. They started with an improvised scrimmage game against Saint Francis High School in Sacramento on Thursday and lost 8-1.
“Because they had a ton of rain over there we ended up facing different teams than we were scheduled to play, but we were able to get a scrimmage and five games in over the three days,” said LHS softball coach Austin Mayo. “You go over there and it is a different level of softball than we are normally used to. You run into some teams that play year-round, it is good for us. We are kind of a young team, so we knew that going over there it wasn’t going to be easy. We knew we were going to have a lot of questions and answers afterwards. We saw improvement in each and every game and that is all you can ask for. We wanted to get the live pitching and the at-bats at that level of competition.”
At the Elk Grove Tournament the Lady Buckaroos lost three games on Friday and two more on Saturday to start the season 0-5 in non-conference play. Host school Franklin took down Lowry 11-5, Rialto beat them 8-0, and Rodriquez finished off the day with a 13-2 win. Righetti started Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Lowry, and Del Oro finished them off 14-0.
Mayo said about the games at Elk Grove, “Kelcey Cooper made the All-Tournament team at second base. She was consistent and batted clean-up for us all week long; she really stepped in and got us started. Madi McClellan locked down the hot corner for us at third base; she made every defensive play that she could and swung the bat really well.”
Lowry heads to Spring Creek for their first league games on Friday, March 15 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, March 16 at noon.
“We are going to take it a pitch at a time, every game matters from here on out,” Mayo concluded. “I am expecting some big things from our pitching staff this year. We hit well in every game so far, so we are going to try and keep the sticks going at Spring Creek and clean up a little defensively.”
Lowry’s next home games will be on March 28-29 against Fernley.
