The Winnemucca Junior High School girls volleyball teams are  half-way through their season and are putting up a good showing at this point.

The seventh-grade squad has a 6-2 record and the eighth-graders are sitting at 5-3.

“This season is going really well," said WJHS Eighth-grade volleyball coach Tawnya Root. "I have thrown a lot on these girls as far as getting them ready to play in high school. I have shown them rotations and made sure that we always have three blockers; our transitioning on and off the net has been good. Those things are more important to me over the wins and losses at this point.”

Root’s squad lost their first contest of the season at Carson, but they have come back strong ever since, winning five of the last  sixcontests. Their other two  losses were both to Fallon teams, putting them at their 5-3 mark.

“They are really good if they play at the caliber that they are capable of, but sometimes that is hard for them to find," added the coach. "They are a very, very talented team; they just need to put it together.”

Winnemucca has a  tournament in Lovelock on Saturday and then the Warriors host a tournament on Saturday, on March 16. The season ends in Lovelock on March 23.

“Kailey Franklin is having an awesome year, as is Jada Matheny,” Root concluded. “I am excited to see these girls in the future in high school because they are that good."
