Warrior wrestlers open season in Lovelock

The Winnemucca Junior High School (WJHS) wrestling team went to Lovelock last weekend and got of to a good start. 

“We took 28 wrestlers and finished with 12 champions,” said WJHS coach John Brooks. “That is not bad for our first outing.”

Eighth-graders Damon Fetty, Felix Munoz and Coda Nichols all brought home the top prize, while Rodger Facey grappled to a second place finish.

Braden Hammargren and Jeremiah Simmons were third in their respective weight classes and Juan Lopez was fourth. 

Brayden Casalez, Luke Fentress, Anthony Guzman and David Walker all won for the seventh-graders.

Anthony Gonzalez, Chris Gildone, Kalub Prather, Bryce Kuykendall and Landon Esquivel earned runner-up finishes.

Diego Contreras, Ryan Adair and Braiden Dennis placed third and Damien Barajas was fourth  

At the sixth-grade level Jhett Harbor, Gage Kinder and Donovan Walker were victorious in their weight classes, along with fifth-graders Pete Bengochea and Maddox Hislop.

Jhett Paulsen was second in his weight class. 

“Coach Corak and I will try to use this and build on it," Brooks said. "We are heading to Fernley this weekend and we will host our own tournament on Saturday, March 9.”
