The eight 10-12 year old Little League all-star teams in District 3 will play in Winnemucca for a week to earn the honor of moving on to the state tournament in Boulder City.
The Opening Ceremonies will be held on the main Little League field at 425 East Haskell Street on Saturday, starting at 6 p.m.
The night will feature a pitching contest, a home run derby, a dunk tank, and a movie night will be held on the field.
The games begin on Sunday, at 8 a.m. with Silverada (Dayton) taking on Walker River (Yerington).
The Winnemucca boys will square off against High Desert (Fernley) at 10:30 a.m. White Pine (Ely) plays Elko at 5:30 p.m. and Ruby Mountain (Spring Creek) meets Northeastern in the last game of the day starting at 8 p.m.
The Winnemucca 10-12 all-stars are managed by Brad Bauman, Rhett Harbor and Matt Growcock are the coaches.
The players on the team are Jakob Bauman, Brandon Cardenas, Tomas Chavez, Kaleb DesJardins, Joseph Esquibel, Kayd Garner, ReiCyan Grau, Zaquery Growcock, Jhett Harber, Kaleb Koons, Gabriel Lange, James Putvain, Aidan Tregellas.
"I have coached Little League for eight years and this will be my third year coaching the all-stars at different levels," Bauman said. "So, we have all kind of come up together. My focus as a coach is to create a team atmosphere. We perform as a team and we go through the ups and downs as a team. No matter what happens on the baseball field during the tournament, I want everybody that watches this Winnemucca team to walk away saying “that was a great group of kids”. Having the tournament in Winnemucca is a plus travel-wise, but when you are at home there are a lot of distractions that these kids could have. The home league is in charge of getting the field ready, but luckily we have a great group of volunteers with the Winnemucca Little League.”
On Monday, July 1, the losers of the Silverada/Walker River and Winnemucca/High Desert games will play at 8 a.m. followed by the losers of the White Pine/Elko and Ruby Mountain/Northeastern games at 10:30 a.m.
At 5:30 p.m. the winners of the Silverada/Walker River and Winnemucca/High Desert games will play, and at 8 p.m. the winners of the White Pine/Elko and Ruby Mountain/Northeastern games will play.
This double elimination tournament will continue until the championship game at 6:00 p.m. on July 5, with a second championship game if needed being played at 9 a.m. on July 6.
