On Saturday, June 15, the courthouse park looked like a tent city. Swim teams from Lovelock, Yerington and Hawthorne competed at the community pool. Families set up shelters to shield themselves from the desert sun.

For 45 years, Lovelock’s children have learned to swim at the community pool. Some now bring their offspring to the bluest water on Elmhurst Avenue.

Pat and Jim Rowe opened the spot in 1973. One year later Pat Rowe launched the Lovelock swim team. She’s coached ever since.

On Saturday Pat Rowe made sure the littlest swimmers got wherever they needed to go. Jim Rowe and Rich Wagner signaled the start of each race with a blast from a pop gun.

The smell of chlorine and gunpowder lingered in the air.

Lee and Emmalee Houston grilled hamburgers with the Pershing County Lady Mustangs basketball team. In all, about 40 volunteers made the day go swimmingly.

“Lovelock did great, and the kids made lots of new friends,” said Pat Rowe after the all-day event. “The community support was awesome, as always.”
