Fernley is hosting the three-team Junior Little League District 3 all-star tournament that gets underway starting on June 16.
The Juniors are age 13-15, and the Little League Board and coaches select the players and the coach.
Jon Brooks coached the Winnemucca Blue this season and he is the coaching the all-stars for the third consecutive season.
“I would like to go in and win a couple of games, but I don’t want to put too many expectations on these boys because we have a lot of first year all-stars,” Brooks said. “Walker River and Fernley usually bring some pretty good ball clubs to tournaments like this, so it is going to be tough. I am hoping for some good quality play and some learning opportunities for these boys and that we have a good time.”
Winnemucca plays Walker River (Yerington) on Sunday, June 16 at 7 p.m. The winner will play High Desert (Fernley) on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m..
The losers of these first two games will square off on Tuesday, June 18 at 9 a.m. in the double elimination format.
The championship game will be held Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m., and if needed a second championship game will be at 9 p.m.
“Erick Bergenheir is one of our older, most seasoned players on the team,” Brooks said. “He is really coming into being a ball player right now. He is a leader on the field and he is very knowledgeable. Anthony Guzman and Adam Brooks are both solid pitchers, and our catcher Luke Fentress does a good job for us.”
The winner of these playoffs will travel to the State Championships at Boulder City which start on July 17.
The Winnemucca Junior Little League all-stars include Erick Bergenheir, Adam Brooks, Luke Fentress, Anthony Guzman, Easton Ham, Isaac Ruelas, Marco Ruiz, Glenn Sakurada, Tony Soto, Scott Watson, manager Jon Brooks and coach Brett Sakurada.
