Billingsley brings football camp back to Winnemucca

For two days this past week, Winnemucca native and former NFL player Jace Billingsley held his second annual football camp at Lowry High School.

Mother Nature brought different weather challenges during the two days.

On Tuesday lightning, high winds and rain forced the boys inside and Wednesday’s 100 degree heat at 6 p.m. was no picnic either.

Forty 8-10 year-olds came out for the first day of the camp and 58 eager 11-12 year-olds were in attendance for the second day; Billingsley discussed why he set it up that way.

“We break it into two days to keep them competing with people that are on their same level,” he said. “I think that is what makes them better. The fundamentals from when you first start football until the NFL do not change; you just have to cover them in different ways that suit the kids.”

Billingsley started this summer football camp at LHS last year and he spoke about this year’s event.

“We got a lot of things figured out from last year and had another great showing from the kids," Billingsley said. "They knew a little bit more of what to expect and came in ready to work and they had fun. It was refreshing and awesome to see these kids out here working so hard. It was a success just like year one was, so I am real excited about it. We had a good showing because the kids around here love football and they want to get better. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.”

Billingsley concluded, “Thanks again to the community and the Lowry coaches for their support in doing this camp.”
