The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity girls basketball team split a pair of games this past weekend on the road.
The Lady Longhorns knocked off Silver Springs 39-12 on Friday afternoon and lost 42-31 to Yerington on Saturday.
BMHS head coach Keegan Walchli noted that Battle Mountain played tough defensively and rebounded well for four whole quarters against Silver Springs. She noted the Lady Longhorns also had success with their press leaving the Nighthawks frustrated on offense,
Brynnlee Freeman and Jade Castellanos paced Battle Mountain with 10 points apiece and Ashlynn Newkirk added seven points.
BMHS falls to Yerington
In a rough and physical game on Saturday, Battle Mountain led 8-6, but despite full-court pressure from the Lady Longhorns’ defense, the Lions were able to lead 21-12 at halftime.
Yerington further pulled away in the third quarter with a 13-3 run in the third quarter.
However, the Lions had three of their five starters foul out and on the bench for the remainder of the game with three minutes left to go in the fourth quarter. The Lady Longhorns took advantage of this and battled back to outscore the Lions 16-8 in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough in the comeback.
Battle Mountain was led in scoring by Castellanos, who had 11 points and seven rebounds. Freeman had six points and nine rebounds and Destiny Villanueva also added six points.
Battle Mountain makes its final regular season road trip of the year this week, starting Thursday in Incline at 3 p.m. The Lady Longhorns travel to North Tahoe on Friday for a 3 p.m. tip.
Battle Mountain is back home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, to play Pershing County at 3 p.m.
