MCDERMITT—The McDermitt High School girls  basketball team took home a resounding victory 46-28 against Eureka last Friday night in McDermitt.

“I am just tickled that we beat Eureka,” MHS head coach Jaimi Wilkinson said.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 9-7 lead in the first quarter, and spread it to 19-11 at the half.

“I thought that our defense was outstanding tonight,” Wilkinson said. "The kids rotated well, they understood their assignments, and they defended the paint very well. We held them to 11 points in the first half; that was huge. In the first half Jasmine (Northrup) was phenomenal (3 three pointers, 11 points total). Precious (Masters) is struggling a little bit with some injuries right now, so we are trying to find some other scorers.”

Masters had 14 points and Northrup added 13 total in the contest.

In the third quarter McDermitt outscored the Vandals 16-7 and finished them off 11-8 in the final period.

“Kalli (Sam) scored well for us, and Jasmine lit them up early on,” Wilkinson noted.

Wells is slated for a Feb. 1 game at 6 p.m., rounding out the year at home for the Lady Bulldogs.

“We have a couple of days off now before we play Wells,” Wilkinson said. “We are at home again, thank goodness; my kids need it. They are a little banged up. I may rest some players on Friday if I can.”

McDermitt finishes the regular season  on the road with trips to Carlin on Feb. 8, Owyhee on Feb. 9, and their season finale at Eureka will be held on Feb. 15.

The top four finishers in the Eastern 1A qualify for the Northern Regional 1A Championships in Reno on Feb. 21-23 at Wooster and Hug high schools.

The NIAA State Tournament is in Las Vegas on March 1-2 at the Orleans Arena and high school to be announced.

McDermitt leads the Eastern 1A at 4-0 and is followed by Eureka at 3-1 and Owyhee 2-2. Wels in 1-3 and in fourth place and Carlin is fifth at 0-4.
