Carlson signs letter of intent to play golf at Lewis and Clark State

Years of hard work on the golf course paid dividends for Lowry High School senior Tatyana Carlson.

The Buckaroos senior recently signed a letter of intent to play golf for Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho. She will be joining a team that had success this past year. The Warriors were ranked 24th in the last fall NAIA Top 25 poll.

“I did think it was possible to get where I am,” said Carlson. “I know I put myself out there, I worked hard for it. I was out on the golf course from day to night and I truly wanted it for myself.”

Carlson was the Northern 3A MVP this past fall in 2018 and helped the Lady Bucks win the Northern 3A Regional Championship over rival Elko. She shot a 74 on the final day of the NIAA 3A State Championships in Truckee to win the individual title with a two-day score of 155, to beat Truckee’s Ryan Flynn by three shots. The last player to win an individual state title at Lowry was Makenzie Swecker in 2003.

Carlson was the co-MVP of the Northern 3A in 2017 and she placed fifth at the state tournament. She played in the state tournament in each of her four years at Lowry, including a fourth-place finish in 2016.

“There were some ups and downs,” Carlson said. “I wanted to win the state championship this year so bad. After my junior year I told myself I was done playing around and time to get serious.”

Carlson will be the lone Nevadan on the Lewis-Clark State roster, which features women from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Canada.

“I fell in love when I got up there,” Carlson said. “I am excited to play at the next level. They have some girls that have helped me along. They welcomed me with open arms when I visited and we were able to play some golf too.”

She plans on majoring in nursing, with a minor in Spanish.
