Lady Bulldogs start Eastern 1A season on a high note

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team went to Wells this past Friday night  and returned with a 50-43 win over the Leopards for their first game of league play.

McDermitt was sluggish against Wells at the beginning, but they came back strong; they lost the first quarter 14-5, and the second 13-12.

However, the Lady Bulldogs came back for the bone in the third quarter, out scoring the Leopards 14-11 and finishing up 19-5 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

“I thought Wells had a good game plan and they executed it well in the first half,” said MHS coach Jaimi Wilkinson. “They came out and punched us in the throat. We lost our focus and we started playing scared. But, we made our adjustments in each quarter and we clawed our way back into the game.”

The Lady Bulldogs are now 1-0 in league play and 9-3 overall for the year.

The girls come back to McDermitt for their only home stand of the season starting on Friday, against Carlin at 6  p.m. and Owyhee comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. rivalry game on Saturday.

Eureka visits for another league game on Jan. 25; Wells is slated for Feb. 1, and they round out the year at home for the Lady Bulldogs. McDermitt finishes the year on the road with trips to Carlin on Feb. 8, Owyhee on Feb. 9, and the season finale at Eureka will be held on Feb. 15.

The Northern Regional 1A Tournament will be held Feb. 21-23 at Wooster High School in Reno and Reed High School in Sparks.

The State Tournament is in Las Vegas on March 1-2.
