After losing its last four games at home, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team got back on the winning track last week.
Battle Mountain made its way to Lovelock on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and came back home with a 49-29 win over rival Pershing County.
The Longhorns held the Mustangs to single digits in every quarter, in the low-scoring contest. Battle Mountain led 11-6 after one quarter of play and increased the advantage to 26-14 at halftime. A 15-6 run in the third quarter pushed the gap to over 20 points and the Longhorns were never challenged.
Marcus Jury paced Battle Mountain with 11 points and two steals DJ Martinez had nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Aldo Castellanos added four points and a team-high 12 rebounds and Danny Diaz had eight points and six assists. Alex Valles also added eight points.
Longhorns pull away
from Falcons
Battle Mountain was back on Interstate 80 on Saturday and traveled to Reno to play Coral Academy. The Longhorns led from the start and cruised to a 65-45 win.
Battle Mountain led 15-9 after eight minutes of play, but coming out hot out of the halftime break put the game away. The Longhorns out scored the Falcons 23-9 in the third quarter and built a 23-point lead.
Diaz led Battle Mountain with 16 points, six assists and four steals. Marcus Jury added nine points and Martinez and Nestor Miramontes each scored eight points. Roy Chavira had six points and eight rebounds and Valles had four assists and Martinez had three steals.
Friday’s home game that was schedule against Excel Christian was canceled.
“It was good to make some shots and get some confidence back with two road league wins,” said BMHS head coach Roger Wallock. “I really was proud of the guys for their commitment in practice this week to work hard and improve on their defensive pressure. We are still making silly turnovers but we are rebounding well and our defense has improved.”
The second half of the Northern 2A season gets under way this week and Battle Mountain hosts two games. West Wendover visits Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip and White Pines is in town on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. start.
After the home games, Battle Mountain will spend the next two weeks on the road.
Battle Mountain will look to avenge a one-point loss to Silver Stage on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns conclude the Lyon County swing on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Yerington at 3 p.m.
Battle Mountain heads to Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Jan. 31, to play Incline and play at North Tahoe on Friday, Feb. 1. at 3:30 p.m.
Battle Mountain is back at home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, to host rival Pershing County at 7:30 p.m.
