The Lowry High School girls basketball team headed to Boise, Idaho, last weekend to compete in the Timberline Tournament
Borah High School hosted the games and Lowry finished the year looking forward to better results.
Lowry lost a close one to the Capitol Eagles 41-39, a 5A division team from Boise, on Thursday, Dec. 29. The loss put the Lady Bucks at 4-4 overall for the year.
“We came out a little sluggish at the start of play against Capitol, but we played well and we were in the game the entire time,” said Lowry head coach Melanie Thurmond. “We had several shots at the end of the game to tie, or win, and we were not able to capitalize on them.”
On Friday, Dec, 28, the Lady Bucks took on the Centennial Patriots from Boise, and Lowry posted a 54-50 loss.
"We had a scoring lull in the second quarter that made a difference in the game," Thurmond said.. "We were able to stick with them. In the final minute and a half, we gave up two very important offensive rebounds that stopped us from getting another chance to score.”
After tying Centennial 11-11 in the first quarter, the Lady Patriots out-scored Lowry 16-9 in the second.
The Lady Bucks came back in the third quarter with a 16-10 effort, but they fell short in the fourth quarter 17-14 to lose to Centennial in the end.
On Saturday, Dec. 29, Lowry faced the Bonneville squad from Idaho Falls and took a 49-33 loss.
“Bonneville was definitely the best team we played throughout the weekend," added the coach.." We stuck with them the entire game and were only down by three when we entered the fourth quarter. We got outscored 17-2 in the fourth; our offense slowed down, we stopped being aggressive, and didn’t have a sense of urgency to turn that around.”
The coach noted Sierra Maestrejuan played a great game today. She had her highest point total for the season with 18 and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
“Overall, the weekend play was slightly frustrating, but we did great things,” Thurmond said. “We played 5A teams and we showed that we can play right with them. As coaches, this gives us a chance to evaluate and see what needs to change in our offense to stop these scoring lulls and really work on our end of game play. We are looking forward to being back on our home court this weekend.”
The Lady Bucks come home to face off against South Tahoe on Friday at 6 p.m. Dayton visits on Saturday for a 1 p.m.tip.
Lowry hits the road after that to play Churchill County (Fallon) on Jan. 11.
It will be rematch of the last two 3A regional and state championship games.
The Lady Bucks return home for another pair of league games against Fernley on Jan. 18, and then Sparks visits on Jan. 19.
