They’re having an eventful basketball season. So, it’s fitting that on Saturday, Dec 22, the Pershing County High School girls basketball traveled to the Lawlor Events Center in Reno.

They watched the Wolf Pack defeat Akron 68-62.

The win may have reminded the Lady Mustangs of their triumph at PCHS the day before. In what Coach Lee Houston called “their best all-around game of the season.”

Pershing County beat West Wendover (48-22) on Friday, Dec. 21.

With the win, Pershing County improves to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the 2A Northern league.

“Our individual and team defense was amazing,” said the coach. “Maria (Jimenez), Kati (Cerini) and Presley (Burrows) took turns guarding West Wendover’s best player and holding her scoreless."

Pershing County’s Faith Happy, a graduating senior, scored a career-high 25 points.

“Faith dominated the paint and her teammates did a great job of finding her all night,” said the coach.

Besides leading Pershing in points, Happy blocked twice and rebounded five times. Colbey Wanner added eight points and three steals. Makenna Houston scored seven points and five steals.

Daralyn Moura threw in a layup, six rebounds and three assists.

On Saturday, Chad Chambers drove a bus full of JV and varsity Lady Mustangs to Reno.

The athletes came to the basketball game not as players, but as fans.

“It was a great experience watching the number six team in the country defeat Akron,” said Houston. “The girls hung out and enjoyed the game. Thank you to Chad for getting us there and back safely.”

The new year begins with a string of challenges for Pershing. They’ll travel to Wooster (Jan. 4), Battle Mountain (Jan. 8) and Incline (Jan. 11).

Then, they’ll host North Tahoe (Jan. 12), Yerington (Jan. 18) and Silver Stage (Jan. 19).

“We hope the win against West Wendover gives us a boost as we head into the meat of our season,” said Houston.
