As the high school wrestling season hit the halfway point, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team found their stride as they hit on all cylinders enroute to claiming the team title at the nine-team Ely Lions Tournament.
“We went into this tournament wanting to see how we stacked up with the teams in the Southern AA,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala.
Leading the way for the ‘Horns were Declan McClary, Jordan Gonzalez, Jose Guizar, Daegan McClary, Zach Duggan and Owen Oakes as they posted perfect 3-0 records and claimed first-place honors.
Declan McClary was also named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Jose Naverette Guizar, Michael Malone, Kris Hall, Ricardo Carrillo and Tyler Rochester finished in second place.
Bringing home bronze medals for their third place performances were: Jorge Chavira and Lyle Whitten, while Jacee Herald, Catrina Shake, Dalton Shake and Alex Jones captured fourth place.
“This was a good tournament for us to see where we are at as we head into the second half of the season,” Domagala said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re definitely seeing improvement.”
The Longhorns will return to action when they head to Idaho for a pair of tournaments on Jan. 4-5.
