Battle Mountain rally comes up short against Incline

The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team dug itself a big hole on Friday, Dec. 21, and were unable to come back from a double-digit, first-quarter deficit to Incline.

The Highlanders’ Taylor Redfern scored 14 of her game-high 29 points in the first quarter, helping Incline to a 22-6 lead after eight minutes of play.

Battle Mountain outscored Incline in the final three quarters, including a 19-7 run in the second quarter to cut the gap to 29-25 at halftime.

“We started slow and the Redfern girl had 14 points in the first quarter,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne.”

The Lady Longhorns found themselves back in the game and trailed by two points entering the fourth quarter. The contest remained close throughout the fourth quarter but Incline was able to hold on for the two-point victory.

Sruti Bhakta led the Lady Longhorns with 12 points, six assists and five steals. Brooke Ripley had 13 points and Grace Melver and Addi Slaybaugh finished with 11 and six points, respectively.

“It was a real good game for our girls,” Tremayne said. “They played hard. We are looking forward to getting back after Christmas.” 

The Lady Longhorns are back home on Friday to play Silver Stage at 6 p.m. Battle hosts Yerington on Saturday at 2 p.m.
