Norvell names Shipp defensive line coach

RENO — Nevada football coach Jay Norvell announced today veteran coach and former NFL linebacker Jackie Shipp will coach the Wolf Pack’s defensive line heading into the 2019 season.

“Jackie has recruited and developed some great NFL defensive linemen,” said Norvell. “He also has coached in some of the biggest games in college football. Jackie Shipp is a great addition to our Wolf Pack staff.”

Shipp played four seasons of college football at the University of Oklahoma where he was a two-time all-conference selection, played in three bowl games and won a Big 8 Championship in 1980. 

Shipp was drafted with the 14th overall pick in the 1984 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins.

He went on to play five seasons with the Dolphins and spent his last year in the NFL with the Los Angeles Raiders. During his time in Miami he was the team’s leading tackler in 1987, won an AFC Championship and made an appearance in Super Bowl XIX.

Shipp brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience with him to the Wolf Pack, including stints with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.

He began his coaching career in 1991 at Langston University in his home state of Oklahoma with one-year stops to follow at Central Missouri State and the University of Tennessee at Martin before spending three years at Southern Illinois as its defensive line coach.

During his stint with the Salukis, Shipp also snagged a coaching internship with the Green Bay Packers in 1994 and another with the Minnesota Vikings from 1995-96.

Following his NFL internships and his time at Southern Illinois, he went on to coach one-year gigs at Northeast Louisiana and Alabama before landing his longest tenured position at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma.

Shipp spent 14 years with the Sooners as their defensive line coach and coached alongside Norvell for five (2008-12) of those 14 seasons.

During his tenure he helped coach Oklahoma to 14 bowl appearances and four national championship games, winning the national title in the year 2000.

After his long stint with the Sooners, Shipp spent the next three seasons as the defensive line coach at Arizona State, helping the Sun Devils to three consecutive bowl appearances. 

Shipp then spent one season as the defensive line coach at Missouri and most recently served as the defensive line coach at Trinity Valley Junior College in 2018.

All in all, Shipp has coached in 18 college bowl games in his career and coached such names as Tommie Harris, Gerald McCoy, Will Sutton, Davon Coleman, Marcus Hardison, Charles Harris, Remi Ayodele, Corey Callens, Jimmy Wilkerson, Dusty Dvoracek and Ryan Fisher, all of whom went on to play in the NFL.
