After ending the regular season with two road wins, the Lowry High School varsity boys basketball team now sits at 16-8 overall and 13-5 in league play.
The Buckaroos finished third in the Northern 3A standings and will be the third seed in the Northern 3A playoffs that begin this week in Reno.
Fernley hosted Lowry on Friday, and the Buckaroos grabbed a 63-47 win against the Vaqueros.
Assistant coach Dave Schwartz was covering the Buckaroos on Friday for an ailing coach Chad Peters.
“We started the game well and had good energy," Schwartz said. "I thought our defense took it to them in the first half. We were a little sloppy in the second half and had some turnovers, but we did what we needed to do to win.”
Lowry ended the season with a 68-27 win at Sparks on Saturday.
“We came out on Saturday and played hard defense and almost everybody scored in that game,” Schwartz said. “Sparks is having a rough year, so we didn’t go down to their level. We played solid and didn’t make a lot of turnovers, we played smart.”
Elko finished the season undefeated (17-0) and Churchill County (Fallon) (15-2) was comfortably in second place.
Lowry finished third with a 13-5 record, while Dayton (10-8), South Tahoe (9-7), and Fernley (9-9) rounded out the top six to get into the playoffs.
Spring Creek and North Valleys were 5-12. Truckee finished at 3-14, and Sparks (0-17) was winless on the year.
The Northern 3A Regional Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday at North Valleys High School in Reno.
The top two teams (Elko and Fallon) receive a bye in the first round.
Lowry will play against the No. 6 seed Fernley at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday.
If Lowry wins, they will play Churchill County on Friday at 4:40 p.m.
South Tahoe and Dayton will face each other in the other quarterfinal game at 8 p.m. The winner takes on Elko on Friday at 8 p.m.
The championship game is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday at North Valleys High School.
