Lowry High School has hired a new varsity  volleyball head coach to replace Brandon Eastman who will be leaving to continue his schooling out of state. He will be looking to get his degree in Sports Management.

Skylar Estes has been promoted from the JV squad coach to the varsity job and will begin in the 2019-20 season.

“This is my second year teaching Pre-K at Grass Valley Elementary,” Estes said. “I was Lowry High School’s freshman volleyball coach for one year, and then I was the JV coach last year.”

The Lady Bucks finished last season at 8-16 overall and 5-13 in league play.

Estes attended Lowry High School from 2007-2010.

“I played varsity volleyball and basketball at Lowry from my sophomore to my senior years,” Estes said. “We won the state title in basketball in 2010 when I played for them.”

When asked about her plans for the upcoming season Estes said, “I want to continue the tradition from the previous years. I would love to bring our team back to the zone playoffs and then hopefully to state as well. I have coached some of the girls that will be on our team next year as sophomores and freshmen. It will be interesting to prove that I can grow players and turn us into state contenders again. I want to continue growing the sport of volleyball in the community as well. I have already spoken to the Spike Frog people and we plan on bringing them back this year to help develop our kids; hopefully there will be two volleyball camps again this year in Winnemucca next summer.”

Even though the official start to the season is months away, Estes is eager to get going.

“We will start doing open gyms as soon as we can,” Estes added. “I think that strength training is very important for all athletes, it makes them a better athlete. This year we will have a lot of juniors and seniors, and I can only carry 12 players; this year our players will really need to show up and put up their best effort, which will make our team better as well.”

Estes added she always wanted to coach.

"I was able to take the freshmen job coaching volleyball at Lowry several years ago when I came back to Winnemucca," she added. "Being a Winnemucca native, I wanted to coach anything and everything. Basketball was my sport growing up, but I learned to love volleyball along the way and that was really helpful. When I played volleyball at Lowry, we didn’t have enough girls to have to make cuts from the team. The fact that we have enough girls trying out now to even have to make cuts is amazing to me.”
