The Winnemucca Junior High volleyball teams hit the road to start its volleyball season with matches in Carson City and Reno.
The seventh-grade squad was victorious in each of their four matches in both cities, but the eighth-grade girls struggled in Carson, only to come back strong in Reno.
“I am just trying to get these girls ready for the high school level,” said eighth-grade WJHS coach Tawnya Root. “They are learning rotations because they didn’t do them last year. We are sort of fixing the broken wheel, if you will. They are going to get better; there are a lot of good athletes on this team.”
The eighth-graders lost every match to Carson, but Root saw some good things.
“The games in Carson were a good learning experience." added the coach. "We had four losses, two were close, and two were not so close. They had some good volleyball players there and they were just ending their season, while that was just our first game. We had a little bit of the “deer in the headlights,” but we actually played pretty well, considering that they were a more experienced team at this point in the season.”
In Reno WJHS won all four matches against Cold Springs.
“Reno was more of a scrimmage set-up, but we did win all four of the matches that we played against them; we played really well," Root said.”
The next contest for the Warriors will be at Oasis (Fallon) today for a tournament that begins at 9 a.m.
WJHS comes back for their only home stand of the season when they host a bi-county meet on Mar. 16 that starts at 9 a.m.
