BMHS JV girls win five games

The Battle Mountain High School JV girls basketball team finished the year with five wins and ended the season at 13-3

Battle Mountain beat Mineral County 45-7 on Friday afternoon, on the strength of its press. The Lady Longhorns turned steals into buckets and scored 25  points in first quarter while holding the Serpents scoreless. And led 30-0 at halftime. Battle Mountain was led by Zarina Ceja with 14 points. Jade Castellanos and Brynnlee Freeman both added eight points and Yezzel Guizar six.

Battle Mountain closed out the year on Saturday with a 63-7 win against Coral Academy. Once again the press led to a quick start, with the Lady Longhorns scoring 21 points in the first quarter.

The Lady Longhorns came out of the locker room after the half with good energy scoring 18 points, ending the quarter with a buzzer beater from leading scorer Destiny Villanueva. She led all scorers with 19 points. Freeman followed with 11 points and Castellanos and Marena Fuller both added 10 points.

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Lady Longhorns came away with a 43-18 win over Pershing County.

On Thursday, Jan. 31, Battle Mountain squeezed out a 43-41 win at Incline.  In a fast-paced game all the way through, the Lady Longhorns outscored Incline 13-6 in first quarter and were able to hang onto the lead from there. Earlier in the season, Incline beat Battle Mountain by 16 points.  Zarina Ceja led all scorers with 13 points. Freeman fought tough inside and had eight points. Ashlynn Newkirk, Yezzel Guizar and Fuller each added six points

Battle Mountain cruised to a 57-12 win over North Tahoe on Friday, Feb. 1. The Lady Longhorns had 38 points at halftime. Fuller and Freeman had 12 points a piece while Villanueva added nine points.
