Lady Bulldogs take down Wells in last home game 53-36, remain undefeated in league

Friday night was Jaimi Wilkinson’s last home game as the McDermitt High School’s girls head coach of the varsity team.

The Lady Bulldogs took her out with style, finishing off the Railroaders 53-36 at home.

McDermitt brought in a 12-3 overall record and they stood at 4-0 in league play coming into Friday’s game against Wells. McDermitt had also taken down the Leopards on their court 50-43 back on Jan. 11.

“Wells had played us the toughest of any teams in our league so far, so going into Friday night I knew that we were going to have to put a good game together and do some things defensively that we didn’t do when we played them in Wells,” Wilkinson said. “We got ourselves into some foul trouble early, but our support players really stepped up and played well for us.”

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter, and led 33-19 at the half.

“Takayla Antonio continues to get better for a kid who has never played any sports before," Wilkinson said. "She came out this year as a sophomore. Every single practice and every single game she gets better. She is ambidextrous, and she has alternated back and forth; but she has it down to shooting with just her left hand, and that is making all the difference.”

The Lady Bulldogs finished strong with an 11-5 run in the third, and they held on in the fourth quarter, going down 12-9, for the 53-36 final.

Precious Masters is averaging 25 points per game with 14 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

McDermitt finishes the year on the road with trips to Carlin on Friday and Owyhee on Saturday. The regular season finale at Eureka will be held on Friday, Feb. 15.

“If we win out we will be the number one seed in 1A going into Regionals,” Wilkinson concluded.

The top four finishers in the Eastern 1A qualify for the Northern Regional 1A Championships in Reno on Feb. 21-23 at Wooster High School and Hug high schools.

The State Tournament is in Las Vegas on March 1-2.
