Lowry crushes
Spring Creek
Lowry started the weekend on a high note with a 63-31 win over Spring Creek on Friday night in front of a packed house.
“We had a good night on Friday, every player scored for us,” said LHS head coach Chad Peters. “We shot horrible from the free throw line; we went 7-of-19, just 37 percent. We held them to 10 or less points in every quarter, which is our goal. Oscar (Juanes) shut the guy who had 26 against us last time down to just one point.”
Lowry jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter against Spring Creek and never looked back.
The Buckaroo defense held the Spartans to eight or less points in each of the final three quarters.
Lowry led 30-16 at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter with a 22-7 run to go in front by 29 points at 52-23.
“The team played great," Peters said. "Our high scorer had nine points, two players had eight and three had seven. It was a very balanced affair. We are starting to learn that if we play as a team, if we know our role, and know our job, we can do some good things and give everyone a run for their money.”
Buckaroos come up short against Indians
On Saturday Lowry faced off with league-leading Elko and dropped a 63-55 decision to the rival Indians.
Lowry jumped out to a quick 10-2 advantage in the first quarter, only to see Elko score the next eight points at tie the game at 10.
The Buckaroos bounced back to lead 16-14 after eight minutes of play.
The two rivals traded buckets for much of the second quarter and the game was tied at 26 after 12 minutes of action.
"The score was tied at 26 at the half, and the best seat in the house winners were loving the view from the back stage," Peters said. “The freshmen class sold tickets as a fundraiser for the first time where the winners get to enjoy pizza, cupcakes, and soda on the couch for the game at the center of the back stage.”
A back-and-forth struggle continued for the rest of the game, but Elko prevailed in the end. The Indians used a run in the third quarter to take a double-digit lead and the Bucks had to play catch-up from there.
The Buckaross take on Churchill County (Fallon) in their last home game of the year on Tuesday.
“Fallon, Elko, and us have separated ourselves from the rest of the league at this point," Peters said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we should finish in the top three if we stay focused.”
Elko holds the lead at 13-0 in the Northern 3A, while Fallon is second at 12-2. Both of those losses have come at the hands of Elko.
Lowry is third at 10-3 and there is a three-way tie for fourth at 8-6 with South Tahoe, Dayton and Fernley.
