The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team picked up two big road wins last week and solidified its playoff standing in the Northern 2A.
BMHS crushes Incline
When Incline visited Battle Mountain in the middle of December, the Highlanders came away with a 53-51 win. It was a much different story this past Thursday, as Battle Mountain won 48-19.
The Lady Longhorns held the Highlanders scoreless in the second half and their top two scorers to a combined seven points.
“It was a great effort by our girls,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We are hopefully starting to peak at the right time. We just have to keep working both offensively and on the defensive side of the ball.”
Battle Mountain jumped out to a 17-11 lead after eight minutes of play and the advantage held at 25-19 at halftime. The Lady Longhorns out-scored the Highlanders 23-0 in the second half.
Sruti Bhakta out-scored Incline by herself with 21 points to go with six assists and four steals. Grave Melver joined her in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds. Drue Domagala and Kaybrie Nield each had six points. Nield also grabbed eight rebounds.
Lady Longhorns cruise past Lakers
Battle Mountain overcame a slow start in the first quarter to knock off North Tahoe 53-22 on Friday night in Tahoe City, Calif. The Lady Longhorns led 8-7 after a quarter of play and increased the gap to 18-9. A 25-point third quarter allowed Battle Mountain to pull away and cruise to the victory.
“We started a little sluggish,” Tremayne said. “It might have been due to the road trip and effort given the night before against Incline. The girls hung in there and did a great job.”
Bhakta paced Battle Mountain with 18 points, 11 steals and five assists. Melver contributed 11 points, six steals and five rebounds. Nield added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Battle Mountain took on Pershing County on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. Battle Mountain hosts Mineral County on Friday at 6 p.m. and Coral Academy on Saturday at 2 p.m.
White Pine leads the Northern 2A at 13-1, while Incline is second at 11-2. Yerington sits in third at 10-3 and Battle Mountain is fourth at 10-4. Pershing County (6-7) and West Wendover (5-9) art fifth and sixth, respectively.
“We are playing pretty well right now,” added the coach. “We have a big league game Tuesday vs. Pershing County. “If we win there we should have a good seed for the regional tournament. I am real proud of our girls they have rallied together and are going to make the end of this season real interesting.”
