Rural basketball league tips off new season

The 2019 Rural Basketball season began in Orovada on Saturday, Jan. 19, with  handful of games in two divisions

Kings River vs Paradise D1

Paradise earned the 16-15 victory. Cody Allen was the high-point scorer for Kings River, sinking three shots for a total of six points, while Wade Mori sank two shots for Kings River with an additional four free throws for a total of eight points.

Paradise vs. McDermitt Blue D2

McDermitt Blue beat Paradise with a final score of 23-13. Kolby Hoagland scored six points with an additional two free throws for eight points, making him the high scorer for Paradise. Akota Smart also scored eight points for the McDermitt Blue team.

Kings River/Orovada vs. McDermitt White D2 

(Kings River and Orovada had to combine in this division this year due to a shortage in students).

McDermitt defeated them with a final score of 31-19. Cody Allen racked up 18 of the Kings River/Orovada's 19 points, the other free throw shot was scored by Colton Elam. For McDermitt White, Clay Harney led the team with 14 points.

The little kids from Paradise played each other. They have 18 players in grades K-2. They tied, 4- 4 after playing two, 10-minute halves.

Orovada vs. 

McDermitt D1

Orovada's home team advantage must have done the trick, and they beat McDermitt 42-31. 

Adan Gomez was on a roll with 11 field goals for 22 and an additional four free throws for 26 total points. Jacob Miller helped him out with an additional 10 points of his own. Isabella Bartell and Colton Elam also made a few points. For McDermitt, Eli Smart drained a 3 pointer,but Laeloni Tobey was the leading scorer with a total of 11, one of those being a free throw shot.

League moves to Paradise

The rural basketball league moved to Paradise Valley on Saturday, Jan. 26.

McDermitt Blue vs. Denio/Fieldd D2

29-13 was the final score for Denio/Fields first game of the season as they were beat by McDermitt Blue. Freya Hagbom played up (she is only in second grade) and scored five points. Maddox Norris scored six and Matti DeLong scored the additional two points for Denio/Fields.

McDermitt's points were mostly attritbuted to the lay-ups of Reign Crutcher, with 14 of their 29 points. Dyaln Palmer scored six and Akota Smart seven, with a little help from AJ Farmer with two points

Paradise vs. McDermitt White D2

It was a hard loss for Paradise on their home court, but the final score was 26-23, with McDermitt taking the victory. Lead point scorer for Paradise was Kolby Hoagland with 10. For McDermitt, Clay Harney scored 21 points, one of those shots being a 3-pointer and two free throws.

McDermitt vs. Denio/Fields D1

Denio/Fields brought height to this game. They towered above McDermitt's players and they were quick. The final score reflected that too at 29-17, with  Denio/Fields earning the win. Rylee Wilkinson ran the boards for McDermitt with a free throw shot, a 3-pointer, and five additional shots for 14 total points.

Areli Pacheco scored a shot and Reese Wilkinson made a free throw. For Denio/Fields the points were spread out amongst the players. Kort Summers scored nine points (one being a free throw shot), he also led in rebounds.  Emmalee Estrada scored six, Mattie Rose Johnson four and various other players made two shots as well (Clint Powers, Billie DeLong, Blake Powers, Caden Montero, and Nia Hunsaker).

Denio/Fields played  two, 10-minute halves against Paradise's two teams. Denio/Fields won 8-6. Then the Paradise kids played against one another for a 10-minute half and tied 6-6.

Orovada D1 

Home court, Paradise found their groove in third quarter racking up 14 points while shutting down Orovada's offense to five, as Paradise won 34-27.

Wade Mori scored 16 points with an additional two free throws for 18 points. Sara Buckingham found herself this year with two shots in the second and third quarters and an additional two free throws for six points. Adan Gomez scored 20 of Orovada's 27 points, Jacob Miller scored five with one being a 3-point shot and Walker Smith made a shot for  two points.
