The Lowry wrestlers grappled in Spring Creek on Friday Jan. 25, and Saturday Jan. 26, against eight league opponents in an attempt to get ready for the upcoming regional championships.
“We wrestled eight duals and went 6-2; we are getting better,” head coach John Brooks said. “We lost to Spring Creek. We had real high hopes of knocking them off. It kind of stung a little bit losing to them. We go out on our duals, and then they just kind of shuffle the cards again the next week and we go again.”
The Buckaroos went down to Elko 42-34 and Spring Creek demolished Lowry 75-6 in their only two losses of the match.
In the Elko dual, Taylor Corak (126) pinned Noah Chacon in 58 seconds, Cade Bell (145) pinned Mark Hauger in 1:48, Isaiah Blanco (106) pinned Elliott Leaman in 3:04, and Jimmy Rackley (138) pinned Ricky Calderon in 4:47.
Caden Ricci (132) took a 15-5 decision over Daniel Allen, and Anthony Peterson (182) won by forfeit.
The Buckaroos only bright spot in the Spring Creek dual was Peterson’s pin of Cody Jenkins in 5:22.
Against Churchill County (Fallon) the Buckaroos tallied a 60-18 win with five pins and five wins by forfeit.
Jace Mentaberry pinned Tommy McCormick in 1:23 at 152 and Blanco took down Lucas Prinz in the 106 class in just 1:45. Isaac Mori won the 120-pound division with a pin over Case Cornmesser in 1:45. Wyatt Hatch took the fall in 3:45 against Corak (126) and Caden Ricci (132) pinned Josiah Rosario in 2:41.
Fernley went down 45-28 to Lowry, as the Bucks picked up four pins, three wins by decision, one forfeit and one disqualification.
Blanco (106) pinned Brodie Garrett in 2:34, Rackley (132) pinned Lucas Jurich in 2:46 and Corak (126) pinned Mason Sloan in 3:11.
Angel Huerta (113) pinned Morgan Zalyniak in 3:30. Brett Ferraro (160) took an 11-9 decision over Emiliano Alonzo, Peterson (182) won 14-9 against Carter Chapin and Josiah Chapman (285) took a 5-0 decision over Alec Carr. Bell (145) won by disqualification over Jared Caulk.
“Anthony went undefeated and that seeds him number one for the zone tournament this week,” Brooks said. “Taylor lost once and will be a No. 2 seed, as will Cade Bell who went 7-1. Isaiah Blanco was 7-1 and will be seeded No. 3. If you can get a one or two seed, that is a good deal, that puts you way out in front. Cade ended up coming back and beating a couple of kids that had beaten him earlier in the year.”
Dayton could not field a full team in the contest, giving up 10 forfeits as Lowry won that dual 72-0.
Peterson (182) pinned Hayden Spencer in 28 seconds and Bell (145) pinned Dayton Conseur in 35 seconds for the Buckaroo victory.
North Valleys took it on the chin 58-21 from the Buckaroos, giving up six forfeits, three quick pins and one loss by decision. Ferraro (160) had a 10 second pin against Miguel Iniguez, and Ricci (132) also managed a quick pin against Joaquin Arevelo, taking him out in just 11 seconds. Bell (145) pinned Isaiah Mclain in 1:33, and Rackley (138) took an 11-2 decision over Josh Gonzalez.
South Tahoe fell 63-9 to Lowry with eight forfeits. They gave up two pins and one loss by decision. Kole Mattson (285) pinned Jesus Chavarin in 57 seconds, and Mentaberry (152) pinned Brandon Ruiz in 3:39. Bell (145) took a 2-1 squeaker decision over Nate Singelyn.
Ricci (132) pinned Jonan Howell from Sparks in just seven seconds in the 132 pound class for the fastest pin of the meet, as the Buckaroos grappled to a 63-12 win over the Railroaders.
Bell (145) pinned Manny Carbajal in 23 seconds, Huerta (113) pinned Noah Aparicio in 45 seconds. Blanco (106) pinned Gabriel Reyes in 52 seconds, Peterson (182) pinned Jasper Melger in 2:52, and Mentaberry (152) pinned Jesse Chavez in 2:58.
The Buckaroos are in Fernley this weekend for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the State Tournament.
“Spring Creek is the team to beat,” Brooks said. “Hopefully, we can battle them and make ourselves noticed. The top four wrestlers qualify for the state tournament. It could end your season this weekend if you have an off day, so you need to keep it dialed in.”
The NIAA State Wrestling Championships will be held on Feb. 8-9 at the Winnemucca Events Center. A full schedule of the State Tournament is available at www.niaa.com.
