Lady Bucks pick up two wins on the road

The Lowry High School girls basketball team extended its win streak to three games last week, defeating Truckee and North Valleys on the road.

The Lady Bucks improved to 3-1 in the Northern 3A 4-3 overall.

In the win over Truckee on Thursday, Dec. 19, Lowry picked up scoring from eight different players and controlled the game from the start.

The Lady Bucks held a six-point advantage after eight minutes of play at 19-13 and increased the margin to 36-25 at halftime.

The difference in the contest was the third quarter, where Lowry came out of the break with a 19-4 run to push the lead to 55-29.

The Lady Bucks saw just about all of that run erased in the fourth quarter, as the Wolverines closed out the game on an 18-4 run. However, it was not enough to complete the comeback.

The Lady Bucks shot 50% from the 3-point line going 11-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Sierra Maestrejuan had five of those 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 18 points. The senior added three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Carly Capellen finished with nine points, all off 3-point shots. Hannah Whitted and Emily Backus netted eight points apiece, Jovi Kuskie seven, Macy DeLong four, Bailee Brinkerhoff three and McKenzi Petersen two. Petersen also had a team-high 13 rebounds to go with two steals. Whitted, Kuskie and DeLong all had four rebounds.

“We played a very solid three quarters,” said LHS coach Melanie Thurmond. “But, we had difficulty scoring in the fourth. Overall, we executed well and defended well.”

Lowry closed out the road trip in Reno on Friday, Dec. 20, with a 58-14 win over North Valleys. Whitted had a team-high 15 points in the easy win.

Lowry had a short Christmas break and was back on the floor on Thursday at the Varsity Elite Challenge at McQueen High School in Reno.

Lowry took on Loyalton (Calif.) and McQueen on Friday and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bucks play Peidmont (Calif.) on Friday and Reno on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Lowry returns to Northern 3A play at home against Elko on Friday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m. The Lady Bucks host Spring Creek on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m.
