MCDERMITT — The McDermitt High School girls basketball team continued its undefeated run in the early part of the season in its home debut last Thursday with a 66-35 win over Pyramid Lake. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-0 on the year.
McDermitt scored the first six points of the game in quick fashion, as Jasmine Northrup and Katie Crutcher split the first six points.
Pyramid Lake did not get on the scoreboard until halfway through the opening period on a 3-point shot.
The Lady Bulldogs countered with five straight points, including a bucket from Meianah Bitt to go in front 11-3. McDermitt settled for a 13-7 advantage after the first eight minutes of play.
The teams traded buckets in the beginning stages of the second quarter with baskets from Takayla Antonio, Kalli Sam and Bitt. However, the Lakers had an answer for each score and kept the margin at 19-14.
Four free throws by Crutcher and Antonio pushed the lead to 23-14 and McDermitt was able to go into halftime up 32-21 after buckets by Antonio and Crutcher.
The Lady Bulldogs broke the game open in the third quarter with an 18-4 run to push the margin to 50-25. McDermitt had five different players score in the quarter.
As the game turned sloppy in the late going, McDermitt continued to increase the lead and cruised to the win in the final eight minutes.
Northrup paced McDermitt with 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Crutcher added 13 points, seven steals, four rebounds and four assists. Antonio was also in double figures with 11 points to go with five rebounds and one assist.
Bitt had nine points, Kalli Sam eight, Cayla Crutcher six points and six rebounds and Rylee Wilkinson had two points.
McDermitt will head for the Bay Area during Christmas Break and play in the West Coast Jamboree this weekend. The Lady Bulldogs open with Northgate, Calif., on Friday at 4 p.m. They will play either North Medford (Ore.) or Los Banos (Calif.) on Friday. The tournament concludes on Monday.
McDermitt opens Eastern 1A play at Wells on Friday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m.
