Battle Mountain wrestlers perform well in Idaho

Teams from throughout the Northwestern part of the country converged on Twin Falls, Idaho, this past weekend for the annual Wiley Dobbs Invitational Tournament.

In a crowded field of 40 teams the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team finished in 18th place.

“This is a great tournament,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “It gives us a chance to see a lot of kids from schools we have never faced. Right now our whole goal is to work on improving our overall wrestling and this high level of competition is exactly what we want.”

After two exciting days of action the Longhorns came away with five wrestlers placing in the top four of their respective weight classes.

Leading the way was Kasen Taylor with a third-place finish. Sean Scherer, Jordan Gonzalez, Tyler Rochester all captured fourth place.

“These guys all showed a lot of character as they bounced back from early losses to battle through the consolation bracket to secure high finishes,” added the coach.

Alex Jones wrestled in the first girls tournament and fought her way to a fourth place finish.

“Alex is improving so much each time out,” Domagala said. “She works hard in practice and it shows.”

Declan McClary, Anthony Silva, Asher Bundrock, Scott Wall, Dalton Shake and Lyle Whitten all won matches over the two days, but came up just short of placing.

“These guys are getting closer and closer to being dominate wrestlers.,” said the coach.  “A couple more weeks and they’ll be steady fixtures on the awards stand.”

Battle Mountain returns to action on Jan. 10-11 with a trip to Buhl, Idaho.
