McDermitt boys pick up first victory of the season

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season this past weekend, with a 74-66 victory over host Virginia City at the Comstock Classic. 

The Bulldogs went 1-3 at the tournament and are 1-6 on the early part of the season. McDermitt began the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 12, with a 71-43 loss to Coleville, Calif. 

The Wolves held the Bulldogs to single digits in each of the first two quarters to build a 33-15 lead at halftime. Coleville claimed a 23-9 lead after eight minutes of play and extended the margin the rest of the way. Coleville outscored McDermitt 38-28 in the second half.

Enrique Villalobos led McDermitt with 20 points and 15 points for a double-double. Braeden Ramsey added nine points, five rebounds and two blocks,  Tristan Bitt had six points and seven rebounds and Steele Crossley had four points. Kaden Crutcher and Alex Navarro each had two points.

In its first game on Friday, Dec. 13, McDermitt suffered a 48-25 loss to Round Mountain.

The Knights held the Bulldogs to eight points in the first half and led 22-8 at halftime. The offensive struggles continued after the break, as Round Mountain increased the margin to 41-14 on the strength of a 19-6 run. The Bulldogs outscored the Knights 11-7 in the final eight minutes to nearly equal their total from the first three quarters.

Villalobos paced McDermitt with eight points and 11 rebounds, while Bitt had seven points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Crutcher and Crossley each had four points and Colby Brown two.

After struggling on offense earlier in the day, McDermitt took off for its highest point total of the year in a 74-66 win over host Virginia City.

The Muckers jumped out to a 23-15 lead in the first quarter, only to see that get erased on the strength of a 28-19 run by the Bulldogs in the second quarter.

McDermitt held a one-point lead at halftime and slowly increased the gap throughout the second half. The Bulldogs led by five points entering the fourth quarter and outscored the Muckers 19-16 in the final eight minutes of play.

Despite finding himself in foul trouble, Bitt led all scorers with 28 points and was one of four McDermitt players in double figures. 

Villalobos added 15 points, 13 rebounds and three steals, while Crossley and Ramsey each had 10 points. Crutcher and Navarro had four points apiece and Brown netted three points. Crossley also had 10 rebounds for a double-double to go with five assists.  

McDermitt closed out the tournament with a 57-37 loss to Sierra Lutheran on Saturday, Dec. 14. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start offensively and were held to eight points in each of the first two quarters. Sierra Lutheran used a 21-8 run in the first quarter to take a 35-16 advantage at halftime.

Bitt had a team-high 12 points to go with eight rebounds and Crutcher added nine points and four rebounds. Villalobos had eight points and 12 rebounds and Navarro and Crossley each had four points. Brown had two points.

McDermitt is in Lassen, Calif., this weekend for the Red Lion Christmas Tournament. The Bulldogs return to the floor on Friday, Jan. 3, to start Eastern 1A play at Wells at 7:30 p.m.
