McDermitt boys drop three games at Reno tournament

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team began its season last weekend with thee games against Northern 4A and 3A JV teams at the Winter Invitational in Reno.

McDermitt opened with a 53-44 loss to the Carson JV on Thursday, Dec. 5. 

After leading by three points after the first quarter, the Senators outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 to lead 27-16 at halftime.

McDermitt bounced back in a big way on the third quarter with a 20-12 run to cut the deficit to three points. However, Carson pulled away late in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Sophomore Tristan Bitt scored half of McDermitt’s 44 points with 22. Kaden Crutcher added six points, Braeden Ramsey and Colby Brown each had five points, Eric Villalobos four and Steele Crossley two.

On Friday, Dec. 6, McDermitt took on Sparks and late rally fell short for the Bulldogs, as the Railroaders held on for a 50-48 win.

Sparks led 31-21 at halftime and used a 13-6 run in the third quarter to lead 44-27. The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring as many points in that eight-minute span than the first three quarters combined.

Bitt led McDermitt with 19 points, while Crutcher contributed 10. Alex Navarro netted six points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Steele Crossley and Ramsey had five each and Colby Brown three.

McDermitt closed out the tournament with a 76-44 loss to the Reed JV on Saturday, Dec. 8. The Raiders jumped out to a 28-10 lead in the first quarter and scored 22 or more points in each of the first three quarters. The Bulldogs outscored the Raiders 11-2 in the fourth quarter.

McDermitt is playing in the Comstock Classic in Virginia City and will be at the Red Lion Christmas Tournament in Lassen, Calif., on Dec. 20-21.

McDermitt begins  the Eastern 1A schedule on Friday, Jan. 3, in Wells at 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs host Wells on Friday, Jan. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
