The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team started its season on a high note, with four wins in five games at the Serpent Classic this past weekend in Hawthorne.
The girls had a very good weekend,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We lost a lot of scoring and leadership from last years’ team. Our young girls stepped up and played well in all five games.”
Battle Mountain opened up with victory over Smith Valley on Thursday, where Kaybrie Nield posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Addie Slaybaugh added seven points, seven rebounds and three steals and Isabella Guzman netted six points and grabbed seven rebounds.
In it’s second game on Thursday, Battle Mountain pulled out a 53-45 win over Virginia City. The game was tied 25-25 at halftime and the Lady Longhorns pulled away in the second half for the eight-point win.
Nield had another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Slaybaugh contributed 12 points and seven rebounds and Zarina Ceja had seven points, four steals and three assists.
On Friday, Battle Mountain cruised to a 63-4 win over Sierra Sage. The Lady Longhorns had three players in double figures, led by Guzman with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jade Castellanos added 10 points and eight rebounds and Nield finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
In the night cap on Friday, Battle Mountain cruised to a 40-22 win over Bishop Union (Bishop, Calif.). Nield had 10 points and eight rebounds, Kira Smith eight points, Slaybaugh six points and seven rebounds and Castellanos six points and five rebounds.
In the tournament finale on Saturday, Battle Mountain was up nine points with three minutes to play, but lost 58-53 to host Mineral County.
Smith paced the Lady Longhorns with eight points, Nield added seven points and eight rebounds and Ceja had eight points, four steals and three assists.
“They had a girl that transferred from Yerington and she scored 29 points,” Tremayne said. “Our youth got us in this one. We found ourselves in serious foul trouble versus Hawthorne and could not hold on. It looks like it should be a fun season.”
Battle Mountain travels to Virginia City this weekend for the Comstock Classic. The Lady Longhorns make their home debut on Friday, Dec. 20, against Incline at 5 p.m. and are back home on Saturday, Dec. 21, to play North Tahoe at 2 p.m.
