The Lowry High School track team traveled to Carson City for a pair of meets last Friday and Saturday.

The JV Invitational on Friday was the site of 22 personal records for the Lowry boys and another 10 for the girls.

Tyler J. Morrison was the top boy finisher with a seventh place personal record time of 2 minutes, 25.58 seconds in the 800 meters, a PR 24th-place finish in the 400 meters (59.52), and he combined with Celso Ruiz, Jesse Hawkins, and Christopher McGuire for an eighth place finish in the 4x 800 relay (10:08.32).

"Tyler is a freshman who works hard and runs hard," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "He would go to both meets if we would let him. He had a nice PR in the 800 meters to finish seventh.”

In the shot put, Lowry punched up five personal bests, including Irah Montanegro (36-9), Nikolas Jung (33-9.5), Lorsix Silva (31-9), JJ Drobny (26-6), and

Cameron Madrid (24-3).

Alethea Houston finished third in the 200 meters with a personal-best time  of 28.72 seconds for the top girls finish of the meet. She also came in 10th in the 100 meters (13.98). Mackenzie Swenson had PR’s in the 100 meters (14.48) and 200 meters (30.74), as did Kayleen Creamer (15.21 and 32.24).

The shot put saw Saree Millikan (23-11.5), Annale Lopez (23-6), and Alesha Houston (23-1) toss PR’s, and the discus was kind to Alesha Houston (66-8) and Lesley Martinez (84-5) as well.

On Saturday, the Carson Invitational featured Rachel Garrison (125-2) with a gold medal toss in the discus, and she was sixth (31-1.75) in the shot put.

Colby Terry was the only other Lowry medalist on the day with a personal record pole vault of 12-0 to take home a bronze.

“Colby is looking to make a big impact at state,” Beatty said. “He works real hard on the vault, so it was good to see him make a breakthrough. He is vaulting with the big boys.”

Samuel Roth, Jeremy Walker, Will Kracaw, and Brandon Lee teamed up for a fourth place finish (8:45.83) in the 4 X 800 meters relay, Scottie Smith (5-10) finished sixth in the high jump, and Anthony Peterson had a personal record (19-01.5) in the long jump for a tenth place finish.

The ladies had four fourth place finishers, including Emily Backus (27.38) in the 200 meters, Adia Bengochea (2:31.5) in the 800 meters, Becca Kuskie (5:35.66) in the 1600 meters, and Heather Hall (110-9) in the discus. Bengochea and Hall’s efforts were both personal records for them.

The Buckaroos travel to Douglas High School today (Saturday) for a 9:30 a.m. meet.

“We go to the Big George Invitational at Douglas this week," Beatty said. "They do a really good job with this meet. There will be over 20 schools there. We have two weeks left in the regular track season and then we jump into zone.”

The Buckaroos will host the Lowry Invitational on May 4 in the final meet of the regular season starting at 9 a.m.

“We are always going to work with all of the athletes," Beatty said. "But as the season winds down we really start to focus on some of the people who will be going to zone and state and try to hone down their techniques to make sure that they are reaching their potential at the right time. We are healthy and things look good right now. We are just trying to finish the year strong.”
