Battle Mountain golfers finish fifth at home

For one of the few times this year, the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team had nice weather for one of its tournaments.

The Longhorns were on their home course on Wednesday, April 17, and finished fifth as a team. West Wendover had four of the top five individual finishes and led the way in the teams standings with a round of 353. The Elko JV was second at 419.

Tonopah and Wells tied for third with scores of 447 and Battle Mountain was fifth at 458. Spring Creek JV (466), White Pine (508) and Jackpot (523) rounded out the team scores.

West Wendover’s Kaden Peterson was the low medalist on the day with a round of 83. Tonopah’s Kevin Pope (86) was second and West Wendover’s Emilio Graham (87), Kameron Keith (91) and Perron Hansen (92) rounded out the top five.

Battle Mountain’s Max Villanueva was sixth overall at 98 and was the lone Longhorn golfer to break 100. Avry Tucker carded a 101 and was followed by Brice Domagala at 126 and Chris Taylor (133).

“It was nice to see Max play well again and medal at his home tournament,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “Avry had a nice round also. We need to work hard the last couple weeks if we want to qualify anyone for the state tournament.”

Longhorns compete in Ely

Battle Mountain traveled to Ely on Wednesday, April 10, to compete in the White Pine tournament. Villanueva placed sixth with a round of 98. Domagala carded a 1-4, Tucker 109 and Taylor 122.

Battle Mountain travels to Wells and Chimney Creek Golf Course on Thursday.

The Northern 2A Regional Championships will take place on Tuesday, May 7, in Carson City and Sunridge Golf Course.

White Pine and West Wendover will not be a part of the Northern Regional Championship and play in the Southern 2A for the regional tournament.

That opens up a couple spots for the Longhorns to claim individual spots at state if they do not qualify as a team.

The top three teams and top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to the NIAA State Championships at Toana Golf Course in West Wendover.
