On Friday, April 12, the Lowry High School (LHS) track and field team sent the JV squad to participate in the Fernley Invitational Track Meet
While they didn’t garner any medals, the boys posted 13 personal record scores and the girls had three.
“We took a lot of our younger athletes to the Fernley meet," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "For the most part Fernley was just a lot of young kids getting some track experience.”
Kevin Warren finished in fifth place in three different events; the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches, long jump (17-5), and triple jump (35-2).
Alethea Houston was the top girl finisher with a personal-best time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.91 seconds.
Omar Castaneda (12.54) finished 21st in the 100 meters and Troy Manske (12.78) was 24th; both times were PR’s.
“Omar and Troy have been working really hard on their sprinting and their times keep improving,” Beatty said. “Alethea is a girl who works really hard. She stays after practice to work on her blocks and her starts, anything to get better. It was good to see her have some success, she is a real coachable kid.”
Lowry takes part in
Northwest Invitational
The Northwest Invitational Track Meet was held last Saturday at McQueen High School in Reno.
The varsity squad grabbed a couple of medals, while the boys had 10 personal bests and the girls had four.
Rachel Garrison threw the discus 117 feet for a silver medal for Lowry, and her shot put toss (35-6) was good enough for a bronze.
“That Douglas girl (Meleeah McKown, 124-6, PR) ripped one to beat Rachel in the discus," Beatty said. "But Rachel has a lot more throws in her for a lot bigger distances. We are just waiting for her to turn that on.”
Will Kracaw (10:09.75) took third in the 3,000 meters, and he was fifth (4:27.30) in the 1,500 meters.
In the pole vault, Colby Terry (11-6) was fourth and Eduardo Aguilar (11-0) took fifth place.
“Our vaulters were the top 3A vaulters there,” Beatty said. “Colby and Terry didn’t top the 4A competition, but I know that they are still competing for the top 2 spots in 3A. Jace (Mentaberry) did real well in the hurdles, we were happy with that, and Jovi (Kuskie) also had a PR in the hurdles there.”
Julianna Gonzalez finished fifth in both the 100 meters (13.86) and 200 meters (28.24), while Becca Kuskie took fourth in the 1500 meters (5:10.01) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:34.44).
“We were pretty loose with our practice schedule over spring break, so it was good to get everybody out there again,” Beatty said. “It is good to see the kids improving; it shows that that they are buying in and staying healthy.”
Lowry traveled to the Carson JV International on Friday, and then the Carson Invitational will be held today (Saturday) starting at 8:30 a.m.
“We will take some of our younger kids to the Carson JV Invitational on Friday, just like we did in Fernley last week,” Beatty said. “We’ll take the rest of the crew to Carson on Saturday and hopefully we can do really well. That will be the best competition that we have seen this season; really a good way to gauge ourself against the rest of the north and see where we stand going into the rest of the season.”
The Buckaroos will travel to Truckee on Saturday, April 27 for a 9:30 a.m. meet before returning to Lowry for a May 4 meet starting at 9 a.m.
The Northern 3A Regional Championships will be held on May 10-11 at Churchill County High School in Fallon. The state tournament will be held in Las Vegas on May 17-18 at Desert Oasis High School.
“Everybody is working hard," Beatty said. "So far, so good.”
