Little League holds opening ceremony for new season

On Saturday, April 13 the Winnemucca Little League started its season out with a bang with opening ceremonies and a day full of baseball games at multiple parks around town.

At 8:30 a.m., 33 teams paraded around the field as hundreds of loyal fans watched them arrive. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Roger Sutton, a long time supporter of Little League since 2008 in Winnemucca,

Anthony Guzman was a Little League player who was ready for action at the season opener.

“I have been playing baseball for four years and I play for Winnemucca Gold now,: said Guzman. "I like batting the most, I like to hit the long balls.”

All of the teams from Winnemucca took a stroll onto the field as the crowd adored them in a parade of players that showcased the kids that would be playing this season.

“I took the job as Little League President when Katie Harmon took the District President position," said Kat Hall. "I have quite a few people on the board and we are working on getting more; more hands means less work for everyone.” Hall concluded, “The kids are the best part of being the president of the Winnemucca Little League.”

Matt Growcock, the coach of the Winnemucca Braves, said before the games on Saturday, “I have been coaching Little League for 14 years at different levels. I love the game of baseball, it is a great thing. I’ve got a bunch of good kids who listen and are willing to learn the game. Please come out and support Winnemucca Little League, it is a great organization.”
