BMHS knocked off by Mustangs, Lady Cats

The Battle Mountain High School softball team met up with two of the top teams in the Northern 2A this past week and suffered a setback with five losses against Pershing County and White Pine.

Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday, April 9, and was defeated 4-3 and 11-1 in the doubleheader.

Battle Mountain held the lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning in the opening game of the doubleheader, only to see Pershing County come back for the win. Sophomore Hannah Stairwalt ended the game for the Mustangs with her base hit.

Pershing County took that momentum from the first game and pulled away in the nightcap for an 11-1 victory.

White Pine sweeps BMHS

League-leading White Pine visited Battle Mountain last weekend and the Lady Cats won all three games in the series.

White Pine jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning in Friday’s single came and added runs in the next three innings as well. The Lady Cats capped off their scoring with seven runs in the fourth inning.

Battle Mountain rallied and scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the first game on Saturday morning, the contest had the same feeling as the night before.

White Pine plated five runs in the second inning and four more in the third to go in front 11-0. The Lady Cats added two runs in the fourth inning, while the Lady Longhorns scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Battle Mountain played its best game of the series in the finale, but it was not enough to knock off White Pine. The Lady Longhorns scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 8-5, but that was as close as they got.

Silver Stage and White are atop the league standings without a loss. Pershing County sits in third at 14-3. Battle Mountain holds the final playoff spot at 8-8. Yerington is fifth at 4-6. The top four teams in the final standings advance to the Northern 2A Regional Championships.

Battle Mountain travels to Yerington this weekend for a tripleheader. The two schools play twice on Friday starting at 2 p.m.
