The Elko Kiwanis Invitational was a very good meet for the Lowry High School track and field team, as the boys snared four first place finishes and the girls grabbed another eight wins.
Emily Backus ran for two personal best times of 13 seconds in the 100 meters and 26.23 seconds in the 200 meters for her victories. In addition, she finished third with a leap of 14 feet, 1 inch in the long jump, as well as taking fourth place (6-6) in the pole vault.
“It was a good meet for the boys and the girls," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "Both as teams and as individuals. Emily beat a girl from Elko who was in the state finals last year.”
Jace Mentaberry (24.44) took the 200 meters title for the boys as well as the 300-meter hurdles (.43) crown.
LHS senior Will Kracaw ran to gold in the 1,600 meters (4:51.7) and silver in the 3,200 meters (10:33.4). Colby Terry captured the pole vault (11-0) to round out the boys champions.
Heather Hall set a PR with her 110-4 toss in the discus to edge out Rachel Garrison (105-1) for the win. Garrison took another second (31-6.75) in the shot put, while Hall finished third (30-0).
Mackenzie Peterson won the high jump with a PR of 4-9, while Adia Bengochea’s PR of 2:33.8 gave her the 800 meters title. Becca Kuskie (12:48.0) took the 3200 meters title, and her younger sister Jovi Kuskie (5:59.0) won the 1600 meters race.
The girls 4x 800 relay team of Kinsey Albisu-Leibfreid, Bengochea and the Kuskie sisters took home the gold with a time of 11:04.7.
“Heather popped out a good throw on her last toss, she really let one rip,” Beatty said. “She is doing really well; she has a lot of natural strength and she has been working on her technique each week, so she is adding some new stuff to her throws and it is starting to pay off.”
Jeremy Walker won two silvers, one in the 800 meters (2:17.8) and another in the 1,600 meters (5:05.7). Eduardo Aguilar took second in the pole vault (10-6), while Sam Roth (55.5) finished second in the 400 meters and seventh in the 800 meters (2:33.2). Kevin Warren (5-6) was third in the high jump, Celso Ruiz (59.2) finished fourth in the 400 meters, and Jasper Glasgow (114-0) was fourth in the discus and fifth (38-5) in the shot put. Irah Montanegro (5-2) took fifth in the high jump.
Lowry travels to Fernley on Friday, for a 2 p.m. meet, and then they go to McQueen on Saturday for an 8:30 a.m. start.
“We will take some of our younger kids to Fernley on Friday," Beatty said. "Saturday will be more of a high level meet. They will see a lot of 4A teams there, a lot of good competition for some of our kids and hopefully we will get some good times.”
